Since 2013, Smoove Gotti has been sharpening his sword. Locked in the lab, with beat after beat swirling around him, the Ohio rapper has been in a chrysalis of musical development. Now, he is finally ready to emerge. “Faded”, “Hell Yeah” (feat. Oh), and “Shattered Star” (feat. Corey Jones), are a few outtakes from his six year sessions; all culminating into a blitzkrieg release for 2019. They each, in their own climatic way, highlight the growth of this Cleveland emcee; and his readiness to dominate the new year with an onfall of genre-bending sounds. “Faded” is a sample-heavy tribute to everyone’s favorite herb; channeling a smooth, softly drummed production under a blunt roll of rhymes. “Hell Yeah” pursues a rap-heavy, Dubstep aesthetic that would float perfectly about a local rave or nightclub; and “Shattered Star” is a sensual dive into airy R&B. Smoove Gotti lays verses full of romantic bars, whilst Corey Jones slips in harmonically to bridge the gaps. There is a variety in this trio of records that explicitly highlights Gotti’s sonic evolution. He forwards a new energy and ambiance with each of these records released; determined not to be pigeonholed in one genre or another. He is always searching for a way to push the envelope, and “Faded”, “Hell Yeah”, and “Shattered Star”, are astonishing successes in that regard. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long for the Midwestern musician’s next project. Slated for an April 1st release, is a joint album with fellow Cleveland artist, R Stonze, titled “Business As Usual”. After listening to these three tracks, you won’t want to miss what’s coming this Spring.
A herculean, hard-hitting 808 is all BoyboiiAT needs to make the banger of a lifetime. Granted, there are several, miscellaneous melodies and ad-libs accompanying, the initial throttle of this new, Missouri hit, “Gah Bag” is exactly what gives it a riotous rush. “Gah Bag” is two minutes and forty-six seconds of unorthodox, modern-trap madness; wherein BoyboiiAT’s unique delivery and flow highlight its potential. Its ingenuity is born from a marriage of dark, infernal percussion and the joyous, iridescent melodies that waft beneath it. Our Kansas City talent speeds through the track with an infallible resolve; throwing bar after bar regarding his love of marijuana. On “Gah Bag”, BoyboiiAT is swift and charismatic; two traits a crowd-crazing banger can not form without. In the scope of contemporary Hip-Hop, it is impressively original; fated to catch your ear and toss your head into a nod. Yes, this year, the Midwest rapper is in his “Gah Bag”; and so long as he keeps this tremendous energy, he’ll never be smoked out.
Flowing like the myriad Georgia rivers, is 16-year old rapper, Blessed.Savage; and his recent release, “Frequently”, is soaked in undeniable swagger. It is two-and-a-half minutes of Zaytoven-esque production (completed by milky, gospel organs and vocal chants), layered underneath the raps of a kid fully coming into his own. Because, the track is not reflective of this artist’s age. On the contrary, it is a testament that if he’s dripping over beats like this now, he’ll be making tidal waves in adulthood. His delivery and flow, over this smooth series of snares, claps and 808s, is inexhaustible. He never seems to tire; in fact, he only gains more vigor as his verses lunge onward. By the second verse, our Riverdale representative was whirling with melodic inflection; spitting throughout the song about the impact that rapping has had on his recent years. If Blessed.Savage can push through the hatred, and continue dropping joints just like this, he’ll be “Frequently” seeing dollar signs.
Hiphop purists will really appreciate the experimental hiphop vibe by producer, Loony Is Normal, paired with the vocab utilized and creative approach to a smoker's anthem by the budding mc, Sudo Black. His new song "Desk Boogers" has the off-kilter beat pattern and original weirdness of Wu-Tang mixed with a OddFuture joint. The cherry on top comes at marker 2:45 when aliens beam the song up in a Kanye'esque mid-song beat mashup. Very trippy stuff!
Get ready to turn all the way up! New up&coming rapper, JoeKer, parties like a rockstar on his hot new single,“M.W.S” which stands for Molly Weed and Shrooms. This is the dopest drunk & high party anthem since Three 6 Mafia's “Smoked Out”.
“M.W.S” is a catchy trap song with a great subliminal message about today's culture as well. JoeKer says, “Listen closely as the hook is saying “Molly, Weed, and Shrooms, its all YOU wanna do”. Meaning drugs has a misplaced influence over society in media and music. “M.W.S” is 1 of the dope singles to be leaked every week until the release of his upcoming mixtape in 2018.
