 Deep within a Bronx, New York asylum, you are trapped. No family, no money, nothing to call your own besides the straps of a cold straight jacket and the confining pads of your white cell. You do have something to look forward to, though: a quick dose of narcotic Hip-Hop that will set your mind ablaze. This is the reality that East Coast rapper, Xtra Overdose, creates with his adrenaline-charged release, “Viral Injection”; eight-tracks of idiosyncratic and outlandish rap. The moment this needle pierces your veins, and fluid enters your bloodstream on “Introjection”, you are bombarded with a torrent of bars. Xtra Overdose is an emcee acrobat on this intro, zipping across a bass-heavy, electro-hop beat with a flow and energy that goes unmatched. Certainly, Bronx spitter is all about his delivery; opting to attack his beats with quirky, rapid-fire rhymes throughout the project. It follows him into his boom-bap bangers, such as “What The Deal”, “My Mentality”, “Sour Apple” (feat. Lex the Hex Master), and “Dead Language”, the EP’s outro. Dux, another guest on the album, assists Xtra Overdose with the club-smash, “She’s A Freak”, and when matched with other slappers, like “Red Dixie Cup”, the album is given a modern-trap, party appeal. Yet, whether he is slaying a Golden Era instrumental or the most contemporary production, this rapper remains energetic. He is unhinged and unyielding in the booth; and that will translate to being an epic performer whenever he hits the stage. “Viral Injection” is everything the doctor on the intro skit warns us it is. Yet, it is so exhilarating, you’ll be begging for another dose.

It was in his Tha Carter III hay-day that iconic rapper, Lil Wayne, let us know that he was a “Martian”. Years later, the enigmatic artist, Future, came into being an “Extra-Terrestrial” before our very eyes. Today, there’s a new galactic star emerging in our solar system, and he is determined to make an imprint on the rap game. Having crash landed in Brooklyn, New York, anomalous rapper, Mr. Rey, has just released an even more anomalous work of art. Titled “Mind of Mars”, with only ten tracks, our East Coast alien proves his talents are equally out-of-this-world. His artistry is colorful, yet gritty; concrete, yet melodious; a unique matrimony between new-age aesthetic and golden era energy. Tracks such as “Epic”, “One Shot”, “Lord Knows”, “Judas”, “FTCU” and “TBH” are anthemic ventures into modern trap music; with the others being hefty, lyrical forays. Tucked into the seventh track, likewise, is something of a dancehall tribute; ignited by Mr. Rey’s lyricism and autotuned inflection. That autotuned delivery is precisely what carves the Brooklyn emcee a spot out among his forefathers; granting him not only a celestial sound, but also, just as matchless musicality. There is nothing like “Mind of Mars” out right now. Hang on to this incomparable quality of music, and our extraterrestrial emcee is bound to invade the mainstream sooner rather than later.

A horror movie-esque piano, complimented by an undulating, sub-bass and pad, opens Michigan artist, BRVDFXRD’s, latest offering, “Swurve”. Just as a distorted 808 makes impact, the Detroit emcee launches into a tirade of bars. “Six feet tall, who?” he questions, surfing a smooth, poised flow across waves of hihats and claps. Adlibs lunge up from the depths of the track, adding newfound, crowd-ready energy to the entire record. Albeit, this Midwest spitter’s release makes the most titanic impression in your car, rocking its speakers; it will go equally as crazy during a packed event. Because BRVDFXRD harbors an amazing command of energy. As subtle as he comes across, tossing bars to and fro along this malevolent, trap production, he still manages to create a raging, contagious banger. Detroit has been blazing hot this summer; and “Swurve” kicks the temperature up even further.
